Is Israel Still God’s Chosen People? Part 2: The Three Promises

In continuing my posts on the fact of whether or not modern Israel is still favored by God today, I would like to look at another point. I believe there are many justifications on the belief that modern Israel is in no way a biblical Israel and a good quick study on this issue would be my previous post about the Veil. (You can find it here.) However, let’s look at another aspect that many false teachers use to make it seem that the Jews are still protected and that modern Israel is still a chosen and favored people of God: The Promises made to Abram/Abraham.

The 3 promises

The Three Promises

God made three promises to Abram in Genesis. To keep track of all three promises I will color code them. The Land Promise will be in green, the Great Nation Promise will be in blue, and the Seed Promise will be red. So let’s look at the first two promises in the text:

14 And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; 15 for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. 16 And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered.

God makes the first two promises to Abram, first, the Land Promise to give his descendants the land which he sees, and second, the Great Nation Promise that he will multiply his descendants as the dust of the earth or as the number of the stars (in the next chapter Gen 15:5)

Now there are many false teachers that will get the audience hung up on the word “forever.” And that this land will ALWAYS be the Jews’ right to own and inherit for all eternity. These false teachers always love to quote the blessings Israel will receive from God, but usually fail to ever quote from the curses and warnings to Israel if they are to turn away from God. Take for instance Deuteronomy chapter 28, there are 14 verses of blessings that these false teachers love to quote, yet they neglect the next 53 verses of curses and warnings. In fact throughout most of the Old Testament, there are exponentially more curses warned than blessing promised to Israel. It is true that God will never back down on his end of the deal, but if you read through the Old Testament in its entirety, you will come to know that it is man that fails on his end of the bargain repeatedly, and not God. Now as far as the Promises go, there are several repetitions of these promises to Abram/Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. To see the full list of these passages, check out the chart at the bottom of this post. However, now that we have covered two of the three promises, I want to fast forward a little ways and cover the last promise made from God to Abram, The Seed Promise.

The first glimpse of this is in Genesis 18:18

18 since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

Now all three promises are referenced when the Angel of the Lord comes to Abraham in Genesis 22:17-18 and says:

17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

Now it’s very clear that God has promised Abraham that he will multiply his descendants, give him the Promised Land, and bless all nations of the world by his Seed. (Notice the word “seed” is singular, not plural as in “seeds.” This is very important later on…)

Have they Been Fulfilled?

So let’s fast forward through the scriptures. Have all of the promises been fulfilled? Or are the “End Times Prophetic Preachers” correct in that they have not been fulfilled and still need to be? If the fact is that the promises have not been fulfilled, then the Jews are very much correct in idea that they are still a chosen and protected people of God. So let’s check out these promises one by one and see what scripture has to say…..

The Great Nation Promise

Let’s first look at the Great Nation Promise. If we continue to follow this promise through the scriptures we will eventually come to Deuteronomy 10:20-22 but first, let’s get some CONTEXT in the story. (Context is extremely important to keep in mind. For more on this check out my blog post on context here.) Now up to this point in scripture, the Hebrews went into Egypt with Joseph, were led out of Egypt by Moses, came to Mount Sinai, received the first tablets of the ten commandments, however, Moses broke them and had to deal with the Israelites committing idolatry with the Golden Calf. Moses goes back up the mountain, receives the second set of tablets and is now speaking to Israel about the law that they are going to be required to keep in order to REMAIN God’s chosen people. So with all that understood, let’s look at the verse:

20 You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him, and to Him you shall hold fast, and take oaths in His name. 21 He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen. 22 Your fathers went down to Egypt with seventy persons, and now the Lord your God has made you as the stars of heaven in multitude.

Notice the word “now.” They had not previously been “as the stars of heaven in multitude” until this point. It is also interesting to note that the great nation promise is always referred to as a future event up to this point in scripture. After this passage, it is always referenced as it has already happened in the past.

The Land Promise

If we follow the Promise God made to Abraham about the Promised Land, then we will be lead all the way from Genesis to the End of Joshua. To get some context from our earlier reading to this point: The Israelites have wandered the wilderness for 40 years, and right before Moses dies, Joshua is chosen to lead the people into the Promised Land. Moses says himself in Deuteronomy 31:7 that Joshua WILL cause Israel to inherit the Promised Land. If this promise has not yet been fulfilled to this day, then how will the modern-day Jews ever have Joshua to divide it for them as scripture says how it must happen? So Moses dies on Mount Nebo and Joshua leads them into the Promised Land. The entire book of Joshua is pretty much a war story of how this was accomplished, and when you get to the end of Joshua, there is an interesting verse in chapter 21 verse 43:

43 So the Lord gave to Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it. 44 The Lord gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand. 45 Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.

I think it’s safe to say that Israel very much received the promise God mad to them concerning the land.

The Seed Promise

But what about the Seed Promise? Well, there is a great deal of reading from Genesis through the scriptures before you get to the fulfillment of that one. As a matter of fact, its fulfillment is not in the Old Testament. You won’t find it until after you’ve read 46 books after Genesis, in Paul’s epistle to the Galatians. But first…context, context, CONTEXT! Okay, there’s a lot to cover here so here we go:

  1. Israel inherits Promised Land
  2. Israel goes through the Judges Period
  3. Israel goes through the United Kingdom Period
  4. Israel splits and Goes through the Divided Kingdom (Israel in the North, Judah in the South)
  5. Israel enters captivity
  6. Judah enters captivity (Daniel foretells that the temple and the wall will be rebuilt)
  7. Judah Returns and Enters Restoration Period (temple and wall is rebuilt in Ezra and Nehemiah)
  8. Jesus is born
  9. Jesus crucified
  10. Jesus Resurrected
  11. Jesus Ascends to Heaven
  12. Holy Spirit Falls on Apostles on Pentecost

Ok so now that we’ve covered almost 1000 years of Israel’s history in a couple bullet points, I hope you see where we are at now. In this letter Paul is calling out the Judaizers who were Christians that thought the Old Law still had to be observed in order to receive salvation. The act of circumcision is directly called out, but it can easily be understood that all aspects of the Old Law to include tithing, burnt offerings, incense, etc. are to be included in this idea of the Old Law not applying to Christians. One of the greatest arguments Paul makes to these Judaizers is all the promises made to Abraham were in fact fulfilled, to include the Seed Promise. He shows this in Galatians 3:16:

16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.

Just in case there is any confusion to this idea, Paul confirms this idea a second time just a few verses later in verses 27-29:

27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

The Seed Promise was fulfilled by Jesus himself. If you check out my post on the Veil, this adds tons of content to this idea. (You can find it here.)

Well there you have it. It is clear that all three promises made to Abraham in scripture have been fulfilled in scripture. There is no need to keep looking for the fulfillment of these promises today, tomorrow, or any further in the future. Jesus really did die once for all (this would include Jews). Jesus really is the ONLY way, and no one will come to the Father except though him. (Not through obeying the Old Law and living in the Old Land) This study should show that it is even more important to reach out to Jews as they think they have security in the Old Law but will in fact perish if they do not come to the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. The book of Galatians is also a good text to realize that once one is baptized, there is no longer a label such as Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female. I would go as far as to argue that the only label one is to have placed on himself would be a Christian. Not a Jewish Christian, or a Messianic Jew, or any of the like. Simply a Christian is what we are called to be. I hope you have found this study as fascinating as I have, and I hope it will help mistaken Christians on this issue find the courage to reach out to our Jewish neighbors, and silence the false teachers that use these promises to lead people in thinking the Jews are still God’s chosen people.

We’re all searching

We’re all searching…. searching desperately for the reason to life, the meaning, true happiness, love, or the answer to our problems.

Science tries to make sense of things through investigation of things seen, theologies, and studying life itself. Economical problems look to the government to solve the current economical pitfalls we face as a culture. An alcoholic drowns their sorrows in another beer. An addict feels the next fix is the solution to the problem. A broken heart searches for another to heal their ache. The unhappy seeks to find happiness. The poor seeks to not feel the burdens of poverty and looks to the rich man’s grass and wonders what it feels like to walk in his shoes only to find the rich man is still searching for something. The sick looks for the cure. No matter who we are, we have all been lost at sometime and searched out answers to our problems.

As I look around, I see a broken society. I see people getting divorced left and right and a shattered home is what is left. The parents are so banged up from the emotional and financial stress, they are simply broken. The children have felt the enormous weight and have no idea how to fix the problem. They are caught in the whirlwind of the war and have nowhere to turn. The parents, after some healing, seek out a new partner to heal their sorrow. Sometimes, the marriage withstands but other times, it is only ended in another broken home.

Children seek to their friends, parents, tv, society for the answers. Many children are not guided these days and the world teaches them its ways. They teach them how to be of this world but the world is broken.

Debt in America is SO huge, we think well if we can somehow climb out of this enormous debt we have created, things will be good again. As time passes, we just keep passing our debt on to the next generation and creating a bigger mess. Maybe the next president can help us. Maybe he has some answers.  Or maybe this other guy knows what he is talking about. Maybe he has the answers.

Science thinks they have it all figured out until, they don’t. They are looked to have all the big answers when all they have is evidence of things they can study right here and now. They can’t explain how the world really began and most don’t want to look to a Intelligent Designer to try to explain the unexplained. They can study, and study, and study, and when they die, there will still be problems they can’t explain. The Big Bang, Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and other theories that are being taught as truth to young children  have caused many to stumble in their faith. Don’t get me wrong, science has did many great things but the theories are only theories. A theory is an idea in which the person suspects. A thesis, hypothesis, and a theory all have to proven before it makes it true. So why is it Darwin’s theory of Evolution is said to be fact? Evolution does occur but it has it’s limit. The definition of theory is a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained. “Darwin’s theory of evolution” No, I did not add the last part. That was the example given (see the picture below). definetheory

Darwin studies the different beaks of the finch. And we can clearly see how things can adapt. But never has anyone seen any sign that we evolved from a monkey. A human has always been  a human. A monkey has always been a monkey. Science is putting their faith in science, man’s theologies, and denying God when they teach/believe these types of theologies that contradict God’s word. In the 2 Timothy, we read;

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. (2 Timothy 6:20-21)

The poor see the rich man driving these nice vehicles, living in these nice homes, and thinks “If I could make a little more money, my problems would be solved.” The rich man is looking to the richer man and thinking the same thing.

One who always seeks money will never be satisfied. If your heart craves the riches of this world, you will spend your whole life chasing after more money. There is many verses in the bible about the love of money and here is a few.

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (1 Timothy 6:10)

He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 5:10)

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)

Some people look to religion, denominations, to find the key to this life. Maybe this religion over here is on to something. Maybe that denomination over there is better than the last one I was apart of. Some turn bitter before they truly find the true hope they were looking for.

The bible warns us that there will be many false teachers, false religions, and false doctrines. If we do not study for ourself we can not know which religions are false. Being a Christian is more than just going to church every Sunday. The Bible instructs us to take up our cross daily. The only way to know the Lord, we must dust off that Bible and study it for ourself.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; ” (Ephesians 6:10-18)

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” (Romans 16:17)

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” ( 2 Corinthians 11:13-15)

“For God is not [the author] of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” (1 Corinthians 14:33)

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” (Matthew 7:15-23)

Throughout all the history of mankind, we have searched for these big answers to the answers to life. As a Christian, I see the brokenness of the world and want to tell them the answer. I want to tell them about the enlightenment of my hope, my faith, the love of Jesus Christ, and our heavenly father. I want to shout out to everyone but no one wants to hear it. I was once deaf but now I hear.

I can see divorce is not the answer. Science is not the answer. More money is not the answer. Man-made religions, violence, cruelty, drugs, alcohol, stealing, lying, cheating, government, gossiping, food, new shiny thingies, fighting, and whatever else we use try to fix the problems.   I see all these things that we have tried to fit into the blank and have not worked but yet generation after generation, we think well maybe, it’ll work this time. I want to show them the answer but no one wants to see….. I was once blind but now I see.

I truly believe we are born with the desire to seek out the Father. We have it instilled in us but on our journey, the devil pulls us down all the confusing paths and we get lost. He holds up a sign that says “Here are the real answers. ____ is the answer. Follow me.” Some will find it for a short period of time only to pulled right back into the ways of this world. And many will wonder around this earth and never find it. Very few will find what really fills their soul. Through all the ups and downs of this life, they have that solid ground to withstand all the ammo the devil has to fire.

As a Christian, it is disheartening that no one wants to hear about this awesome thing you have found. When you buy this new thingy that is the coolest thing since sliced bread, people want to know about it. They rush out and buy it. Not giving it a second thought. But when you have found the best treasure your have EVER found, you’re just religious.

You have found this hope in the bleakest of times. You have this new sense of life. You have found the real reason, the real answer, and this amazing love. And through this amazing love, you have felt love deeper than you ever have. It has changed you for the better. You want to do good things. And while others see the great news as only a set of rules to follow that only chains one down, you feel free. Your chains have been broke from the bondage of sin.  And not only are you free, you have this sense of peace even in a raging storm. You have the best news ever! You want to share it with everyone but very few will have an ear to hear or eyes to see.

Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:34-36)

You can see the destruction your own selfish desires can bring. You see why God says not to do certain things. He says it for your own self good. And just like any good father would do, he warns you of these ways.

The answer is the Lord. His ways are good. He is good. He is love. He is the way, the truth, and the light. He is the beginning and the end.  If we try to live by the moral ways of the Lord, our ways will be right. As a human, we often like to justify our ways to our own self desires. Our morals began to crumble if we all do this. What might be right in one’s eyes might be wrong in another. Suddenly things that were once wrong seem ok. Our society is broken because our foundation is no longer standing on a firm ground. Our nation was once a great nation that was built with Christ as the foundation. But slowly, Christ is being pulled out from our nation.

America’s  founding father’s set up on nation on the morals of God. In the beginning of the school systems, our own government printed the Bibles to be used in the classroom. Now, we can’t say a prayer before a football game. (I recommend watching Monumental. If you have Amazon prime, it is free. If not, you can buy Monumental for $10.69 or you can rent Monumental for $3.99) If you seek the Lord, live by his ways, society is better as whole. The bible tells us not to lie, cheat, steal, murder, gossip, be unjust, not to hate anyone but love one another, help one another, give to the needy, respect the elderly, and do good things. And then, we are to teach them to our own children. If we were all to follow this rule, this world would be a better place.  Each person would be a better person. Our nation could be great once again. You see, the answer is the Lord.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. (Proverbs 3:5-7)

What is Creation Science?

What is Creation Science?

Creation science is looking at the Bible first, and then comparing science to it. However, most modern science, referred to as Secular science, looks at previous assumptions by other secular scientists and does not look to the bible at all for accuracy. Ultimately it is the difference between a Creator that created everything, just as the bible says, or everything is a product of spontaneous happenings that kept advancing slowly into the world we see and know today.

Creation Science (Pt 1)

Why Should Christians Study Creation Science?

Now that we’ve looked at the differences, let’s address the question, “Why?” Why should Christians study creation science? While I do not think it is required to study creation science for a Christian, I do think that a Christian should have some understanding of what it is, and why it is important. Christians, by biblical definition, are people who have accepted Jesus Christ as the Son of God (Mark 1:1), born of a virgin (Luke 1:27), healed the sick (Matthew 9:35), died on the cross for their sins (Romans 4:25), resurrected three days later, and is the savior for the world so that man can go to heaven when he returns (John 3:16). Christians believe that Satan is wandering the planet trying to devour as many people as he can (1 Peter 5:8). Christians follow the teachings of Jesus and Believe the word of God is inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16) and that it is infallible, with no contradictions and no mistakes. While I do not believe that creation science is required of Christians, I do believe that it is foundational to understanding the rest of the bible.

Is it possible?

There are two questions I like to ask, and continue to ask people, including myself. 1. What do you believe? 2. Why? If we are to believe that the bible is 100% accurate, how can there be a fault in the origins account in the bible of how the universe was created? Is it possible that the Bible is correct and that all things were made in a single week, only about 6,000 years ago? Or better yet, what if secular science is one of the biggest conspiracies that Satan has pulled on the world, to make Christians doubt the accuracy of the bible? After all, do we really think we can outsmart the devil? He has had thousands of years of experience in deceiving people. James 4: 7 says “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Notice the word used is RESIST, not REBUKE. We are not to try and take on the devil by ourselves, but by submitting ourselves to God.

Common Obstacles for Creation Science

Now let’s look at some of the common obstacles Satan has set up in the path of creation science. I call these obstacles rather than problems because the bible has no problems. However the bible does have obstacles. What I mean is that the bible is controversial by nature.  People have to overcome obstacles to accept the bible. After all, there are some really extraordinary things that happen in the bible. People raise from the dead, a sick child is healed in another city by Jesus simply SPEAKING, a man survives 3 days in a fish, etc. these are subjects that defy secular science, yet Christians trust they are true. So what are some other secular obstacles for the bible? To list them all would be another blog post all of its own but here are a few:

  1. Big Bang
  2. Evolution
  3. Carbon Dating
  4. Dinosaurs
  5. Noah’s Ark
  6. Distance of the Stars
  7. The Grand Canyon

I cannot cover all of the discrepancies of these topics in one blog post, but I will cover these one by one in the future, and some of these will certainly require more than one post per subject.

Making it Make Sense

So please join me in my future posts on creation science. I will tell you up front, I am no expert, and my hope is that I can turn some of the scientific jargon into a more common way of looking at things. With a little more logic and deductive reasoning, rather than a bunch of scientific babble and confusing terms and explanations. I believe that God made things simple so that every person can understand what God wants and ultimately come to him. After all, 1 Corinthians 3:18-19 says, “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.”
